  2. During the development of PKZIP v. 2.0 for MS-DOS, PKWARE has 
  3. discovered hardware faults in newer 80386 & 80486 computers. 
  4. These faults can cause anomalies in the operation of PKWARE 
  5. software as well as other software.
  6.  
  7. PKWARE has been endeavoring to locate an anomaly that has been 
  8. observed by a number of customers and associated vendors.  The 
  9. intial symptoms of the problem were:
  10.         
  11.   - Particular files extracting with errors on one machine, but not
  12.     on another.  
  13.        
  14.   - Installs of some products failing.
  15.  
  16. These problems have been observed primarily on newer, fast (33Mhz 
  17. or faster) 80386 and 80486 machines.  Investigation of the problem 
  18. revealed no difference in software or hardware between machines 
  19. that failed and machines which did not.  The files which fail do 
  20. not fail every time.
  21.  
  22. To further test where the problem was occuring, a very simple 
  23. program which would load a test file into a RAM buffer and then 
  24. copy it to a second RAM buffer was created.  The program then 
  25. compares the two buffers one byte at a time and reports any 
  26. discrepancies.  Discrepancies with even the simple copy were 
  27. noted.

  29. If the EXTERNAL CACHE is turned off through the BIOS 
  30. configuration, the problem does not occur.

  32. This is indeed a hardware flaw. 
  33.  
  34. While this effort to work around these hardware faults will, 
  35. unfortunately, delay the release of PKZIP v. 2.0 for MS-DOS, we 
  36. hope to release it in the next few months.
